Acne can be so embarrassing, stealing ones confidence and just making life miserable. I remember the acne I had during one football season, the embarrassment, particularly following shaving which only made it worse. Visiting with girls on campus, keeping one hand near my chin in an effort to hide that area. I so envied those guys that had that clear, blemish free appearance.
I washed, sometimes just scrubbed that area. I used the popular medications of the day and even tried washing the area with alcohol and hydrogen peroxide. No change, my efforts only seemed to spread it. So what is this facial embarrassment? What causes it? How can we prevent or treat it?
Acne is a skin irritation that can be any one or more of the following: whiteheads, blackheads, comedones, more commonly known as congested pores, pimples, commonly called zits, pustules, and boils. I used to think, those with only one zit, how lucky.
Common causes can include eating at irregular hours, consuming excessive starch, sugar, fried, and fatty foods.
The increased production of sebaceous material due to a hormone imbalance or side effects of stress.
Stress can release an overdose of adrenalin into your blood stream making the acne problem looks worse than it actually is.
Rising hormone levels during puberty may cause acne as well.
My acne was caused by excessive oil mixing with dirt that was present in the environment (sweating, dirt, etc. inside the chin strap), which caused my skin to clog and thus producing acne.
Treatments for acne may include prescriptive medications, over the counter medications, alternative treatment and homemade remedies.
I would first begin with the obvious, eating properly including a healthy diet and appropriate meal times.
Next is the cleanliness part. Take care of the oil and environmental dirt that could be clogging the pores.
Check out your stress level. Many of us are procrastinators, putting off important tasks, a very fixable cause of our stress. You could be one of those worry warts that over attends to minor problems until they become unmanageable.
Find relief. Check out your local health foods store for natural cures and/or talk to your pharmacist regarding possible over the counter treatments.
Finally, severe cases should be taken to physician, you may need a prescriptive treatment.
I kept trying all of those 70s treatments such as Clearasil, Physohex, and others, finally I found a product named Stridex. It was a cleanser that came in a jar with saturated round discs or pads. Most products in the Stridex line contain as the active ingredient Salicylic Acid (0.5-2.5%); Stridex Power Pads, containBenzoyl Peroxide (2.5%), and are the first acne treatment pads to do so without requiring a prescription for purchase.I would use in the morning, following practice and in the evening.
I have heard others have had success with Clearpores Cleansing System, QenMed Derma Cleanse, and AcneZine.
Suffering the embarrassment of acne days are over. There is such a variety of effective treatments, its just a matter of matching possible cause to product.
