In today’s society, adult acne is a very common occurrence, as skin problems don’t only affect those in their teens. More apt to suffer from acne than men are adult women. In terms of permanent scarring caused by skin problems, adult men are at higher risk. Adult acne is not caused by improper hygiene, contrary to what most people think.

Acne is caused by a number of different things, in truth. Three key factors which lead to skin problems are infection, oily skin and hair ducts that do not close as they should. In both adults and teens, these factors remain the same.

When small deposits of fatty tissue, dead skin and keratin get clogged in hair ducts, pimples occur. This clogging produces a blackhead when the duct is open. It is referred to as whiteheads when the duct is closed. Eventually a whitehead will rupture because it is closed. Adult acne is caused by this bursting which also causes redness and infection.

Adult acne is associated with many myths. Oily foods, fish and chocolate do not cause acne, according to dermatologists. Acne is not caused by stress in itself. Skin conditions have been known to be caused by certain stress-relieving drugs.

If you sit out in the sun or wash your face several times a day, acne does not clear up faster. It can actually do more harm than good to wash your face many times a day. Only darkening your skin and scarring are caused by sitting in the sun.
