A number of controversies are surrounding sports every now and then. Same is the case for baseball. One of these controversies is using steroids in baseball. Often we hear that a player was on steroids but most of us don’t know actually what a steroid is and its side effects.
Steroids are the synthetic male version of the hormone testosterone. This hormone is responsible for the growth and the development of muscles. When hormone testosterone is added to steroids much can be achieved such as muscle mass increase, endurance ability is improved, body fat is reduced and many more.
Now, the question is why the athletes are so keen to use it? By intake of steroids athletes perform better and have an edge on competition. Many baseball athletes believe that they can hit harder and aim for a home run with intake of steroids.
Although steroids may be an advantage, but it has a number of side effects for both physical and psychological. Looking at psychological effects, baseball athlete is known to different types of moods from having the mood of well being to as far as being in depression. Also, it is said the mood switches from one to another quickly. Physically, steroids can increase the ability to endure or increase muscle mass but on the worst side it is known to damage liver, can cause cancer, excessive hair loss or growth, acne problem, testicular atrophy and much more.
Nowadays, athletes use it because they believe it to be the inevitable path leading to fame but little do they acknowledge the fact that the side effects that can lead to permanent disability. Thus, common man questions whether steroids are worth it considering the rewards and its risk. In the long run, no matter what, regular intake of steroids will harm the athlete.
Many legendary baseball players have been surrounded by steroids controversies but no proof has come up to prove that steroids have been used by these players. Take for example Barry Bonds, Gary Sheffield, Mark Mcwire and many others who have been surrounded by baseball and steroids controversies. Barry Bonds was accused of using steroids to set a record number of home runs in one season. He was accused of being provided steroids by his long time friend. The question that many raised was whether it was the use of steroids or that Barry had a dream season?
No matter what until there is no proof one cannot say whether steroids are being used by baseball athletes or not. Many believe that an athlete still has to face the ball and hit it. So, whether using steroids or not, athletes still have to face the ball.
Steroids give many rewards to the athlete such as strength or fame but no matter what its side effects cannot be compromised with its use. The side effects can damage athlete physically permanently. Steroids are not worth using.
