Over the years, any of us who have struggled with acne have probably heard countless reasons why we have encountered the annoying and often embarrassing condition.

Many of us find it confusing to understand what real causes for acne are and which acne myths are. Below are a few of the more common acne myths that you may have heard before.

Myth #1 – Chocolate

This is one of the acne myths that have been circulating for many years. If you eat too much chocolate, your skin will break out, or youll end up with acne. Many studies have been done regarding the correlation between chocolate and acne, and have proven to be unfounded.

Myth #2 – Acne is Only for Teens

While acne is common amongst teens because of hormonal changes, acne can strike with anyone regardless of their age.

Many adults who struggled with acne as teens continue to do so into their adult years. Some adults even find that they begin having break outs as adults when they never struggled with acne in their younger years.

Myth #3 – Cola Causes Acne

This is another one of the acne myths that studies have shown to be untrue. While consuming massive amounts of colas and carbonated beverages arent the best choice in beverages, no studies have proved it causes break outs or acne.

Myth #4 – Scrubbing Your Face and Washing it Often Cures Acne

While it is important to keep your face clean and free of oils and dirt, there can be too much of a good thing. Studies have shown that scrubbing your face too hard can actually damage the skin and in turn cause more problems with acne.

Washing your face too often can also dry out the skin, clogging the pores and causing more acne problems. Its best to keep your face clean and free of excess dirt and oils, but dont overdo.

Myth #5 – Long Term Exposure to Sunlight Cures Acne

Even though it may at first appear to clear or dry acne problems, there has been no studies that support that long term exposure to sunlight will cure acne, which adds this to the list of acne myths.

Even though you may find that your self-esteem is better because of having a tan. The redness may be temporarily reduced; it could actually cause more acne problems in the long run. Dont forget too much exposure to the suns harmful UV rays can also cause skin cancers.

Quick Summary

One of the best ways to reduce your chances of break-outs or to possibly even cure acne is to find an all natural products that you can use daily. These products should contain the essential vitamins, minerals and herbal extracts that help you say good bye to acne.

It’s unbelievable … What if I told you that most of the popular beliefs about acne, are in fact myths?

Let’s take a look at some popular beliefs about acne to dispel any other rumors …

Myth #1: Is it true that increased stress spreads acne?

Not exactly. What is true is that ultimately stress can have a very minimal or minor influence all by itself. It cannot actually cause acne, but it can influence reoccurrences of acne as stress increases the body’s creation of a substance called cortisol that in turn causes your sebaceous glands to produce increased amounts of sebum oil that can be blocked in pores. Note, however, that some medications people take when trying to deal with or treat stress can have a large influence on acne as the result of medication side effects.

Myth #2: Acne is contagious, true or false?

Not! No one can “catch” acne; it is non-communicable.

Myth #3:You’ll outgrow acne, so just leave it alone – myth or truth?

This is false. Acne strikes all ages and is treatable, but shouldn’t be left alone to possibly worsen.

Myth #4: Being out in the sun helps acne, right?

In the long run, no. The sun may appear to help clear up your blemishes and redden your skin, thus lessening the overall reddish effect of the targeted acne area when it was outstanding. However, rays from the sun can cause skin damage and actually irritate skin more, worsening any existing acne problems in the process and clogging more pores as skin cells dry up and slough off quicker than normal. So use caution (and sunscreen) here!

Myth #5: Sweating helps clean out your hair follicle areas, myth or reality?

Another myth. In reality, strenuous activity can temporarily increase your body’s oil production that can actually worsen acne problem areas, causing recurrence or intensification.

Myth #6: Acne problems are directly proportionate to sexual activity, or lack thereof; true or false?

False, another myth. Just because teenagers are going through hormonal changes, does not mean that this has anything to do with acne. Both are separate issues. Same with adult acne and sex; two entirely different issues.

Myth #7: People with acne are dirty and don’t wash enough.

Not! This is another myth. Acne is the result of a build up of oil, dead skin cells and bacteria in a closed pore. Period. Dirt is not even a factor in the equation.

Myth #8: Acne is only on external issue or surface deep; i.e. people shouldn’t make such a big thing out of it, myth or reality?

Myth. In reality, yes, it basically is only on your skin (and underneath the surface a little bit). However, the effects run much more deeper than that in many instances. More than 50 percent of those suffering acne problems reported negative comments and other feedback from members of society, regardless of whether or not there was any scarring left for others to see afterwards. And resulting internal depression and low self-esteem can be harmful emotionally not only short-term but over a person’s lifetime. So acne can indeed be a very big issue requiring healthcare treatment and support.

Myth #9: OK, myth or reality: there is a cure for acne?

Myth. Although there is no cure at this time, there are many treatments available that do a great job. As the saying goes, “Prevention is the best medicine;” however, there is no need to suffer in silence with all the options available on the market today for all price ranges.

So there you have it … now that you are armed with this information you can do something to treat your acne condition.

Are you having a hard time dealing with acne and considering taking your friends advice to get rid of your breakouts and your frustrations? I need to come forward; I gave them a try and the results weren’t pretty. This is a short tale of how I made my acne worse.

Before we start naming the worse acne remedies out there, I’ll explain why I gave them a try. A few years ago I dreamed about turning 25 to see for the first time in many, many years a pimple-free complexion. I thought that 25 was way beyond puberty and that I would just magically get rid of my acne problem.

As I turned 25, the problem didn’t magically disappear and I was very disappointed and frankly, a bit depressed. My self-esteem went at the bottom of barrel and I just couldn’t make myself go through the endless and very expensive path to find an acne skin care product that would work for my skin. I believe I’ve tried just about everything that I could reach, but my budget was suffering as much as I was.

Due to my low budget, I started researching about home remedies for acne. This means a bunch of ingredients that I would rather had in my belly than on my face. So, let’s take a look at the list.

Acne Myths and Remedies I Tried!

The first was to over-wash my face. I had read somewhere that acne was caused by the dirt on your face, even though I knew this wasn’t true, I gave it a try. I thought I’ll just wash my face more frequently. The end result: The pimples that I already had become irritated and my skin looked and felt very dry. Very uncomfortable and very unsightly.

The second attempt was to stay away from fatty foods such as pizza and chocolate. I did, for 1 entire month. Although I must say I lost a few pounds, I didn’t see any real improvement in my skin condition. A healthy diet can help you feel and look better, but it’s not a remedy for acne. I now have made Friday, Pizza Friday!

I also tried to ‘dry-up’ my pimples with lemon juice. It consisted in slightly soaking a cotton stick with fresh lemon juice (squeezed), dabbing the acne lesions and keeping it over-night. This is supposed to help to reduce swelling, redness and of course get rid of acne. The problem with this ‘treatment’ was that you got a stinging sensation when applied and that my acne got really irritated. Sigh…

To sum this up, I didn’t write this to upset you or to not get your hopes up. It is rather to warn people about taking advice from friends about remedies that are supposed to help you get rid of acne. And the good news is that my search is finally over, I found a natural product that didn’t dry out, grease out or aggravate my acne. I get a pimple now and then, but most of the time my complexion is clear and I feel so much better!

The best way to prevent and control your acne is to find a proper acne skin care product for your skin type. Don’t lose hope because there are products for you. Let the search begin!
